Seeking Michigan Author Award Nominations

The Michigan Library Association is seeking nominations for the Twentieth Annual Michigan Author Award. The award recognizes an outstanding published body of literary work by an author who is either from Michigan or has substantial ties to Michigan.

Nominations are due February 29, 2012

Mitten and Thumbs Up! Award Nominations Accepted Through April 30, 2012

Nominations are being accepted for the Mitten and Thumbs Up awards through April 30, 2012.  The purpose of the Mitten Award is to recognize and promote quality literature for youth, ages 0-12.  Michigan librarians will utilize their critical skills to choose the award and will improve their reader's advisory skills.  Any book that is published between May 1 and April 30 for children, ages 0-12, may be nominated for the award.   The purpose of the Thumbs Up!award is to recognize and promote an outstanding contribution to teen literature that has both literary quality and teen appeal for those 13 to 18 years of age.  Librarians will gain reader's advisory and critical thinking skills, while promoting quality literature at their home libraries.


Gary D. Schmidt, 2011 Michigan Author Award Winner

MLA is pleased to announce that Gary Schmidt is the winner of the 2011 Michigan Author Award. Gary will be accepting his award at the annual MLA convention in Kalamazoo, MI.



This is the 20th year the award has been given in recognition of an outstanding body of fiction, non-fiction, poetry or playscripts. The work of the previous nineteen winners covers a wide range of styles but they all share a common connection to the state of Michigan.


2011 Thumbs Up! Award Winner

The Michigan Library Association (MLA) is pleased to announce that Sorta Like a Rock Star written by Matthew Quick and published by Little, Brown and Company, is the winner of the 2011 Thumbs Up! Award, garnering top votes state-wide from both teens and librarians.


2011 Mitten Award Winner

The Michigan Library Association is pleased to announce that City Dog, Country Frog by Mo Willems, published by Hyperion, is the winner of the 2011 Mitten Award.

The Mitten Award was established in 1999 "...to recognize one children's book published in the United States within the calendar year that has captured the attention of children's librarians throughout the State of Michigan for its ability to communicate through literature to an intended audience."

City Dog, Country Frog is the story of the unusual friendship that develops and grows between two animals over the changing seasons. It was illustrated by Jon Muth.
