Guiding Principles and Positions of the Library Community 2011-12
Michigan’s future depends upon it accomplishing and sustaining a successful transition from a manufacturing economy to a knowledge based economy. In an age of limited resources, and with Michigan facing a significant economic transition and deficit, MLA's Guiding Principles and Positions notes the concept that there is, within the broad universe of library patrons, a significant subgroup “the knowledge base patron.” Focusing libraries’ efforts on this group will do the most good in rebuilding Michigan.
MLA’s guiding principles drive our legislative and regulatory agenda positions. These represent core issues that libraries hold in common. This serves as a filter to identify, either in support or opposition, issues before the Legislature on which MLA should take a stand. This enables MLA to be nimble in response to bills that are introduced and allows us to educate legislators and the public about what we will fight for. They presume that MLA speaks on behalf of the interests of library patrons, because what's good for library patrons will ultimately serve the interests of libraries and librarians.
Accordingly, the state has a vested interest in supporting institutions that nurture, enrich and expand the pool of knowledge based citizens. Michigan library patrons are essential constituents of the knowledge base.
